Talk: “Obscene Configurations” by Whitney Strub

“Obscene Configurations: Race, Sexuality, and the Politics of Obscenity”

A Talk by Professor Whitney Strub

When: Monday, November 8, 2010, 11:30 – 12:50 pm
Where: Conklin 447
Refreshments will be served

Professor Strub will discuss how obscenity law has been deployed in the
interests of maintaining a heteronormative, white-supremacist body politic
in the United States. This talk examines several episodes in the history of
that deployment, also showing how the politics of obscenity and pornography
facilitated the rise of the New Right as a political movement in the U.S.

Professor Strub is an assistant professor of History and an affiliate
member of Women’s and Gender Studies. His forthcoming book is
Perversion for Profit: The Politics of Pornography and the Rise of the New
Right (Columbia University Press)
